Did you know that in Florence, within a museum, or rather, in a gallery, there’s a colossal giant made of white marble? It’s so tall that when they decided to place it in a room in this gallery, they had to raise the ceiling, or else it wouldn’t fit!
Its name is David. David is famous worldwide! People come to see him from Japan, China, and the United States, patiently waiting in line outside the gallery for their turn to enter!
In one hand, he holds a stone, and in the other, a sling, with furrowed eyebrows and worried eyes. No wonder… soon he’ll have to try to defeat Goliath, a terrible giant who wanted to destroy the people of Israel. And he doesn’t know how it will end, although he trusts that God will help him in his endeavor, even though he knows he’s super skilled with the sling!
Oh yes! David, still a young boy, used to be a shepherd. With his sling, he had chased away many wolves that would have eaten his sheep. Confident, he decided to try, with his sling, to defeat the giant. Yet, he’s a bit scared, you can see it in his eyes…
But wouldn’t you be afraid in front of such a terrible giant? Maybe I would be a bit…
This story of David is from the Bible, but why is this marble David a giant? The David in the Bible is a child! He certainly can’t be so muscular, let alone so tall! Who knows then why Michelangelo, the sculptor who carved him, imagined him like this… And who knows how this story will end… to find out, come with me to visit the Accademia Gallery! In the meantime, you can enjoy reading the story of David in the PDF below.
